Bob Loblaw's
College Football Midseason Report
Well, we are now halfway through another glorious and memorable season of college football and as a wise man once said, “if every instinct you have is wrong, then the opposite would have to be right.”  So goes college football, as every year we are amazed and appalled by the preseason rankings as overrated and underrated teams alike wow us with their on-field exploits conjecture meets reality on the gridiron.  Let’s get to it as we break down each conference at the midway mark:
BEST TEAM: Boston College.  The Eagles are undefeated and have soundly beaten all comers.  They have the best quarterback in the country so far in Matt Ryan and will be 7-0 after Saturday unless their starters get lost on the way to Notre Dame.  They will most likely be in the league title game in December, probably facing off against Virginia Tech, but who knows.
BEST PLAYER: The aforementioned Ryan, who should be the Heisman front-runner if preseason hype is not factored in.
BIGGEST SURPRISE: Either Duke winning a game or North Carolina (with coach Butch Davis) beating Miami.
BIGGEST DISSAPOINTMENT: Hard to say at this point but so far you could point to Clemson as they once again appear to be sliding downhill after a fast start.  Or Georgia Tech, who looked so impressive the first weekend (when we all still thought Brady Quinn was at Notre Dame) and are now 3-3.
BEST TEAM: At the moment, it is South Florida or Cincinnati in a dead heat as both are undefeated.  Did anybody order up that game on Gameplan before the season?  Methinks though that West Virginia, assuming Pat White is healthy, will find a way to win the league in the end.
BEST PLAYER: Still has to be Brian Brohm; he has thrown for a zillion yards and TD’s and his team, even when they lose, scores 30+ points.  It is not his fault he is joined with the Colts defense from the mid-90's.
BIGGEST SURPRISE: South Florida is ranked 5th?
BIGGEST DISSAPOINTMENT: Louisville, no question.  3-3 after being a preseason top-10 team.  Oh, and they lost to SYRACUSE, who before the season was rated as possibly the worst team in any BCS conference.  If they played a 16-game season, Louisville could maybe get to 9-7 and sneak into the playoffs, but not here.
BEST TEAM: Ohio State.  The Buckeyes look frighteningly similar to their 2002 National Title team, with a great defense and an offense that finds a way to score.
BEST PLAYER: Mike Hart, the guts and glue of the Maize and Blue, leads the nation in rushing, running over defensive backs, and guaranteed wins.  He’s the all-time leading rusher at a school that has run the ball well for over 100 years.
BIGGEST SURPRISE: Illinois, back from the dead, ranked and undefeated.  Maybe they can put together the kind of multi-year run not seen since the days of Jeff George.  Where is he now by the way?  Anyone know?  Had Indiana beaten Illinois, the Hoosiers would be filling this slot.
BIGGEST DISSAPOINTMENT: Some would say Michigan for starting 0-2, but they are back and tied for first in the league.  Seriously, would they have gone 12-0 and won it all with that defense?  The pick here is Iowa.  Now 0-3 in the Big Ten and the only team to lose to Iowa State (need to beat those in state rivals), they are in last place after several bowl years.  Kirk Ferentz used to be able to crack his car window and have an NFL job offer hit him in the face, but now he’s gotta watch out for corn cobs fired at him by distressed fans.  If things don’t improve he might want to hightail it out, Alford style.
BEST TEAM: Still Oklahoma.  Other than a bad half against Colorado, probably because they were looking ahead to Texas, they have rolled.  Missouri, the other undefeated team, will try and take this crown Saturday in Norman.
BEST PLAYER: Michael Crabtree, Texas Tech.  The freshman, repeat: FRESHMAN, wide receiver has 70 catches, for 1074 yards, and 17 Touchdowns in 6 games.  Got him on your fantasy team??  Might have drafted those numbers ahead of Steven Jackson and Larry Johnson had we known, huh?
BIGGEST SURPRISE: Colorado, with all of their issues, (like hard practices and strip club trips in the past) beating Oklahoma.  Apparently, they realized that this is Big 12 football!  This ain’t intramurals!
BIGGEST DISSAPOINTMENT: Texas, a fashionable national title pick in the early going, has gotten whipped in 2 games and has not looked real good in the ones they have won.  Is there another Vince Young-like recruit out there?  Honorable Mention goes to Nebraska, who nearly lost at home to Ball State.
BEST TEAM: CAL.  They beat Tennessee, Oregon, and everyone else they have played.  They will have to beat USC to take the crown, but they get them at home and will never have a better chance.
BEST PLAYER: Desean Jackson.  The Heisman finalist (right now) has made a big play in every big game.
BIGGEST SURPRISE: Uhh, I don’t know.  I guess we’ll go with Stanford, the FORTY ONE POINT underdog, beating mighty USC in the Coliseum.  Hope OJ wasn’t betting any of his memorabilia on that line.
BIGGEST DISSAPOINTMENT: The Men of Troy, preseason #1, will now need lots of help to have a shot at the national title.
BEST TEAM: LSU has beaten all comers and done it in all ways.  The most complete team in college football.
BEST PLAYER: You could make a case for Glenn Dorsey of LSU, but linemen usually get shafted on these awards so we will follow that trend and give it to an offensive guy: Andre Woodson.  He has led Kentucky to the promised land of the top 10 (usually, you would say “back to the promised land,” but the last time they were ranked in the top 10, which they were until last week, was before I was born.)
BIGGEST SURPRISE: Auburn, after 2 losses, (including one to Mississippi State; WOW!) goes into the swamp at night and beats Florida.  Looks like the Florida football/basketball national title repeat run ends at 3; and you know Billy Donovan wanted so badly to try and make it 4.  Darn.
BIGGEST DISSAPPOINTMENT: Hard to call yet.  Even the teams like Tennessee, Georgia, and Auburn, who have lost games they should have won, have then won big games so this one will be decided later.  I guess when you are the best league in all the land, nothing is disappointing.
All of these rankings and items are subject to change and can become invalid 15 minutes after they are posted by another upset.  Unlike ESPN, we do not anoint anyone “best ever” (player, moment, game, coach, team, league) until all the dust has settled and we are able to look at the whole picture.  Also, the worldwide fear that 6 teams are going to end up undefeated and mess up the whole BCS is always thrown around at this time every year.  Patience is a virtue, and if you wait most teams will find a way to lose their perfect season.
