D-Bag of the Week (11/13/07)
Born John Edward Bayless II, the man now know as Skip can be seen and
heard polluting the airwaves on ESPN's First Take or as a frequent guest host of
The Jim Rome Show on AM radio.  Skip has written for
The Miami Herald, LA
Times, Dallas Morning News, Dallas Times Herald, Chicago Tribune
, and San Jose
Mercury News
.  All that background, and yet he's now debating sports stories on
a little-watching morning program on ESPN.  Originally partnered with the
almost equally-abrasive (and remarkably more gremlin-ish) Woody Paige, Skip
has gained notoriety by making bombastic statements.  He is well-known in the
Dallas area for having called Cowboys QB Troy Aikman's sexuality into question
in his book,
The Crazy Truth About the "Win or Else" Dallas Cowboys.

Skip is disliked by many of his viewers and his peers because his comments are
controversial and inflammatory, as he often espouses views held by few others.
His fans would argue that he is disliked for going against the grain, but his fans
are just as stupid as he is, so their opinions are irrelevant.  It is clear that he is a
shameless self-promoter who spouts controversial opinions in order to gain
notoriety.  While stirring up controversy is not wrong in and of itself (hell, it's
what we at ScrubSports.com strive to do every day), it's wrong to make hollow
statements just to drum up interest.  This guy makes the rest of the posers at
ESPN look like legitimate journalists.  But what's that old saying: "Good
publicity, bad publicity, just as long as you spell my name right.  Well, in that
case, maybe we should have spelled his name wrong, because we want no part
of this man's continued semi-success.

For representing all that is wrong with sports journalism (and we use that term
lightly), Skip Bayless has earned the D-Bag of the Week.
