After thinking about it for nearly 2 seconds, I determined that that was far too ambitious a topic, both for me and for my readers, so I decided to boil it down. I thought about delving into and addressing my own homophobia but I didn’t think it would hold much water. I mean, I’m not really scared of gay people, just of what gay dudes are thinking when they look at me. And I don’t feel that’s a fear of gays as much as it is a fear of the unknown; hell, I’m scared of what a lot of women are thinking when they look at me. Unless, of course, the woman in question is hot; then I’m not too worried.
In any case, I needed to begin my research, so I turned to a source where limitless amounts of information sits at your fingertips: YouTube. I had stumbled across a video there some time back and thought that it might be of use. As I was about to begin, this powerful force was gnawing at the back of my head and telling me in a loud voice to get to work. So after I finally got my wife to shut up, I got back onto the computer and rediscovered this gem: Dude Kicked out of Cubs Bleachers.
While the video itself is pure hilarity, it was the comments I was after. I knew I had seen something there before that could help me. Sure enough, after muddling through 195 posts of varying intelligence, relevance, and grammatical correctness, I uncovered several homophobic references (writer’s not: there were several homoerotic ones as well; I recommend taking a look at the postings in their entirety, as it’s a pretty interesting, and at times depressing, window into our society).
