Random Thoughts and Observations from the 2007-08 NCAA Football Season
George Streeter

I know the college football season is officially over and we’ve moved on to the NFL playoffs, but I
wanted to look back and note some thoughts I had regarding this past season.  I would have done
this earlier but I have just now fully recovered from the alcohol-induced coma I fell into after Notre
Dame lost to Navy and Air Force on consecutive Saturdays.

--  The SEC is good…..really good.  It is far and away the best conference in America.  Yes, SEC fans can be loud
and annoying because they feel that they’re the only conference that matters, but they do have a point.  Right
now the best football in the country is played in the South and it’s not even close.

--  Is it just me or does USC just look bigger, faster, and stronger than everyone else?  I truly believe that if you
didn’t know who they were and just watched them play you might think you were watching an NFL team.  They
are just scary.

--  If I were a Michigan fan I would actually be upset after watching them beat Florida in the Capital One Bowl.
Where the hell was that all season?

-- Kansas, South Florida, Boston College, and Hawaii were all ranked in the Top 10 at some point this year.  Notre
Dame, Nebraska, Miami, and Florida St. each finished outside the Top 25.  Who are you and what have you done
with my college football?

--  On that note…… memo to Hawaii, Kansas, Illinois and all other one-year wonders: Thanks for stopping by.  We
hope you had a pleasant stay.  Have a safe trip back to mediocrity.

--  I hope Charlie Weis enjoyed eating his humble pie this year. Oh, who am I kidding…by the looks of it he
appears to enjoy every type of pie.  You have exactly one season to get the Irish back to respectability and you
absolutely need to be held accountable for the 2007 debacle.  Your bloated ego and lack of head coaching
experience were definitely a contributing factor to that awful season.  And yes, this is coming from a man who
actually lives in the shadow of Touchdown Jesus.

--  What has happened to Bob Stoops?  He used to known as “Big Game Bob.”  Now he’s getting blown out in big
games even when his teams are heavy favorites.  The Sooners just haven’t seemed prepared or motivated for
their recent BCS appearances against teams with significantly less talent (Boise St., West Virginia).

--  Mack Brown is overrated and owes his career and reputation to Vince Young.  He could only beat OU when he
had Young and OU was down.  He could only get to BCS games when VY was there.  The guy is a good coach, but
not a great one.  Yes, he does win 10 games every year but you should do that at UT.

--  The Big Ten just isn’t very good right now.  The top four programs: Ohio St., Michigan, Penn St., and Wisconsin,
are pretty good but the rest of the conference is mediocre at best.  The difference between the SEC and the Big
Ten isn’t at the top.  It’s in the middle and bottom of the conferences.  The SEC has nine or ten legit teams year in
and year out.  The Big Ten is lucky to have four or five.

--  What is it about Urban Meyer that just makes me want to punch him in the face?

-  Was I the only person that took great pleasure in watching Alabama and Nick Saban struggle mightily this year?

--  The Heisman Trophy is quickly becoming the most overrated award in sports.  I thought the award was
supposed to go to the best player in the nation, but it’s obvious that it only goes to the best back in the nation.  I
think it would bring more excitement to the trophy presentation if defensive players were actually considered for
the award.

-- I am sick of seeing college coaches jump from job to job and break their current contracts without any
repercussions.  Players who choose to transfer are forced to sit out a full season before they can regain their
eligibility.  Wouldn’t it be interesting to see how many coaches left their current job if they were held to the same
standard?  I’d like to see AD’s actually sac up and force these coaches to sign contracts with huge buyout
clauses.  If that particular job is really important to the coach then he might actually honor that contract.
